Which Metal to Choose for
your Engagement Ring?
Another important thing to consider when designing
your engagement ring is the type of metal you
would
like to use. Most people will already have a preference for gold, pink
or silver coloured metals.
If you prefer silver metals, you might want to
consider a platinum or white gold engagement ring, as silver is a
particularly soft metal which might not last you very long.
Gold engagement rings are the most popular choice,
either in white gold, yellow gold or pink gold. Which colour
you choose simply comes down to personal preference? The two most
important parts of gold is colour and carat.
Gold carat
The carat of the gold refers to the pure gold
content of the metal. You may notice that carat is the same term
used to measure diamonds and gemstones, but the two measurements are
different. The higher the carat of metal the
higher the content of fine gold, and the more expensive the metal will
be.
In Australia, gold generally comes in two different carats, 9ct and
18ct:
9ct gold contains 37.5% of pure gold, and will be
stamped 9ct or 375.
18ct gold contains 75% pure gold, and will be stamped 18ct or 750.
The mixture of each type of gold is known as an
alloy and the rest of the mixture is made up of different metals
such as silver and copper which give each metal its unique appearance
and properties.
Pure gold, 24ct, is generally considered too soft
to be used to make wedding and engagement rings.
When choosing gold engagement rings many people
consider the hardness and durability of each particular carat.
9ct yellow gold and 18ct white gold are harder than 9ct white gold and
18ct yellow gold, due to the characteristics
of the alloy.
As well as the hardness, there is significant
colour difference between 9ct and 18ct yellow gold and 9ct and
18ct white gold. Kate can provide samples for you to look at and

Platinum:
The other popular metal used for engagement rings
is Platinum. Platinum engagement rings are becoming
increasingly popular due to the hardness of the metal, but also the
prestige that the idea of a platinum ring
brings with it.
Platinum is very hard and durable, and much
heavier than gold, as well as more expensive.
